Khon Kaen–Vientiane Bus Route Restarts in October 2025
Travelers in Thailand and Laos breathe a sigh of relief as the popular Khon Kaen–Vientiane bus service returns on 10 October 2025. The revived route, operated by the state-owned Transport Company Bor Kor Sor, connects northeast Thailand with the capital of Laos for just 180 Baht per trip.
Buses Cross the Border Again
After a pause in service, the international Route No. 5 resumes just in time for the high season. Attawit Rakjamroon, president of the Transport Company, says, “The resumption of this service offers more comfort for travelers and strengthens tourism and economic ties between Thailand and Laos.”
Air-conditioned buses with 42 seats run twice daily in both directions. The journey from Khon Kaen starts at 8:15 am, while the Vientiane departure is at 2:45 pm. The 194-kilometre trip takes around four hours.
Simple, Stress-Free Travel
Travelers board in Khon Kaen at Bus Terminal 3. From there, the Khon Kaen City Bus offers easy access to the city center. In Vientiane, the Central Bus Station (CBS) sits conveniently next to the Morning Market.
Tickets are sold only in Thai Baht and are available daily from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Passengers must show a valid passport when buying tickets. For questions, the hotline (+856) 20 96834578 is ready to help.
Khon Kaen–Vientiane: Thai and Lao Buses in Action
A unique feature of the Khon Kaen–Vientiane route is the alternating operation by Thai and Lao buses. Both companies charge the same fare of 180 Baht. The Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise (VCSBE) confirms it will run its service in parallel with the Thai operator.
Departure times are well coordinated. Buses leave Vientiane at 8:15 am and 2:45 pm, and depart Khon Kaen at 8:15 am and 3:00 pm.
More International Bus Routes Between Thailand and Laos
The Khon Kaen–Vientiane bus is part of a growing network. The Transport Company now runs 11 international bus routes between Thailand and Laos. Popular lines include Bangkok–Vientiane, Udon Thani–Vang Vieng, Chiang Rai–Bokeo (Shuttle Bus), and Loei–Xayaburi–Luang Prabang.
This extensive network makes cross-border travel easier and more affordable than ever.
What the Bus Link Means for Tourists
The return of the Khon Kaen–Vientiane bus comes at the perfect moment for the travel season. Tourists can now move easily and cheaply between northeast Thailand’s cultural gems and the charm of Vientiane.
The route is set to delight not only tourists but also business travelers and border residents, boosting regional economic integration. Will this new convenience spark a surge in cross-border journeys?
