KHON KAEN, Thailand — Thailand and Laos have launched a new international bus service linking Khon Kaen and Vientiane, a move officials say will enhance tourism, trade, and cross-border connectivity between the two countries. The route, inaugurated on October 10, is the fifth such link and is expected to provide a significant boost to regional economic activity.
Service Details and Official Launch
The new bus service was officially introduced at a ceremony at Khon Kaen Bus Terminal 3, attended by Phanthep Saokosol, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen province. The route spans 194 kilometres, with a journey time of approximately four hours and a fare of 180 baht.
On the Thai side, the Transport Co., Ltd. operates a 42-seat air-conditioned coach, departing daily from Khon Kaen at 8:15 a.m. and returning from Vientiane at 2:45 p.m. The Vientiane Capital Bus Enterprise provides a 25-seat minibus, departing from Vientiane at 8:15 a.m. and from Khon Kaen at 3:00 p.m. daily.

Strategic Timing and Broader Connectivity
Attawit Rakjamroon, Managing Director of Transport Co., Ltd., stated that the launch coincides with the High Season for travel, aiming to facilitate both citizens and tourists. “We are launching this route just in time for the High Season to facilitate citizens and tourists. It offers a convenient, fast, and safe public transport connection, which we expect will effectively promote economic and tourism linkages between Thailand and the Lao PDR,” Attawit said.
Plans are also underway to integrate the new route with Khon Kaen Airport, providing a seamless connection for air travelers. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Transport’s policy to improve regional connectivity and promote multimodal transport options.
Regional Cooperation and Future Prospects
Kaewwanphon Worntiwongxi, Director of the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise, described the partnership as an important step in strengthening cross-border relations. “This route will not only promote tourism and commerce but also deepen the friendly ties between the people of both nations,” Kaewwanphon said.
Tickets for the service are available through the Transport Co.’s official website, its E-ticket app, social media platforms, and at all Bor Kor Sor counters across Thailand.

Implications for Regional Development
The opening of the Khon Kaen–Vientiane bus route is expected to facilitate greater movement of people and goods, supporting economic growth in both countries. By expanding international bus links, Thailand and Laos are reinforcing their commitment to regional integration and cooperation, with potential benefits for tourism, trade, and local communities.
